What is a Coaching and Respite Platform

Support and respite platforms provide support to caregivers of people who are losing their independence (seniors, people with neurodegenerative disorders). The concept of respite can be defined as temporary physical support, an individual’s emotional and social loss of autonomy in order to allow relief to his main caregiver and thus to avoid exhaustion that would compromise both his health and the home maintenance of the sick person.

Originally created to help loved ones accompanying a person with Alzheimer’s disease on a daily basis, Support and respite platforms are now extending their support to all family members who support an elderly person who is experiencing a loss of independence regardless of their illness. They offer a whole range of formulas: day receptions, respite at home, rehabilitation workshops, caregiver meetings, social and cultural activities.

They meet four objectives:

  • respite for the caregiver, whether at home or away from home, to give them time off,
  • support for the caregiver (who can be individual or group to share experiences and experiences with other caregivers),
  • appropriate and stimulating support for the dependent person,
  • maintaining a social life

In 2013, 130 platforms were already registered. The number continues to grow, and 80% of them are linked to a day reception. They are in most cases led by a team that includes administrative and supervisory staff, medico-psychological assistance, nursing care and possibly other professionals.

The reception of helpers is systematically preceded by an assessment of their needs. The main criteria taken into account, in order to offer an adapted respite solution, are age, personal and economic situation, and health status.

For the most part, the platforms are surrounded by partners allowing them to offer various respite solutions. If they rely most often on day receptions; the SSIAD (Home Nursing Services), the specialized Alzheimer’s teams, the EHPAD and the associations of assistance to the carers are all privileged partners. The number of partnerships established by the platform naturally depends on the number of structures present in the territory. Thus, among the other structures with which the platform can maintain a partnership, the CLIC (Local Information and Coordination Centres) occupy a large place, but also the MAIA (Houses for Autonomy and Integration of Alzheimer’s patients) when they are present, as well as memory consultations, home help services and Communal Centers of Social Action (CCAS). For the latter, the partnership is more institutional, some platforms being directly linked to the CCAS.

When the caregiver receives a respite, various arrangements for the support of the dependent (assisted) person are implemented. The two most common solutions adopted by the platforms are attendance at day care and the presence of a worker in the home of the dependent person. Temporary accommodation in an EHPAD can also be offered.

The platforms essentially provide individual psychological support to caregivers. In this context, they offer interviews with their coordinator, as well as discussion groups led by professionals. Courtesy phone calls, adapted training cycles, but especially wellness activities are intended for caregivers (gentle gymnastics, relaxation, yoga, but also outings in the form of days outside). The majority of platforms offer activities to the assisting couple (meals, cultural and artistic activities, museum visits).
